LUKE 9:26 DEVOTIONAL

"Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and the holy angels." - LUKE 9:26

In this passage, the word ashamed (epaischunthē in greek) means to be ashamed or to be publicly shamed. This happens many times in the bible. When Peter denies Jesus 3 times (Mark 14:66-72) David prays with no regard to the new law and follows and trusts his God. (Daniel 6:10-12) Many were ashamed of him because he called himself the bread that had come down from heaven, they knew he was the son of Mary and Joeseph so they didn't believe him when he said he was from heaven. He even says "Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown". (Mark 6:4)

  • So how can we not be ashamed of the Gospel?

If you're feeling ashamed of the good news of Christianity, it might mean that you don't fully believe in it or are unsure about your faith. A good way to describe this uncertainty is to think of someone sitting on the fence, trying to choose between a solid house built on rock and a shaky one built on sand.

You might say you're a Christian, but if you don't see the fruits of the Spirit—like love, joy, and peace—in your life, that’s a sign to reflect. You might read your Bible but lack the motivation or desire to really engage with it. Perhaps you grew up in a Christian home where your parents either pushed their beliefs on you or assumed you were a Christian just because you were baptized as a baby.

While baptism in itself isn't bad, if you accepted Christ without truly understanding or questioning your faith, then it might just feel like blind trust. Real faith is more like informed trust. When Jesus sent out his disciples, the people who believed in him didn’t just take their word for it—they listened to Jesus, experienced his love, and understood parts of the gospel, which helped them build a strong foundation for their faith.

Real faith comes from diving into the Gospel like it gives you a new life, cause it does. Read Romans 6:1-4 for more context. When we have a new life we are called to run from our old ways and back into the arms of the father. The Prodigal Son is about a son taking his father's money and running away to live a wild life. He runs out of money and realizes that he messed up. He has to eat pig food because of how poor he is, he soon goes back to his father and asks him to be a slave to work away his debt. Instead, the father puts a ring on his finger, puts his best robe on him slaughters a calf, and invites everyone for a feast. "For this son of mine has been dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found."

This story is just like our lives, we sinners all run away from the Father to go a have wild living. We come back with nothing and he takes us in, feeds us, and throws a party because we were dead to sin but now alive in him. We are the Prodigal Son and Jesus is the Father, running out to us to welcome us back to his home and into his arms, this is the type of love that Jesus has. Unconditional.

Prayer: Lord, I thank you for this day. I thank you for the person reading this lord. I pray that they will learn something and you will reveal something to them through this. I pray that you will give the person here peace and help them in their daily life. I thank you for the life that you have given everyone and I thank you for being such a loving father. I pray that this message will spread to others and they will be impacted by this. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
